Anger & Stress: How They Impact Your Blood Pressure
Anger & Stress: How They Impact Your Blood Pressure
Introduction: Anger and stress are universal emotions experienced by people at different stages of life. While these feelings are natural responses to various situations, they can significantly affect your health, particularly your blood pressure. Chronic anger and stress can lead to long-term health issues, including cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure. Understanding how these emotions impact blood pressure can empower you to take control of your emotional well-being and safeguard your heart health. How Anger and Stress Affect Blood Pressure: When you experience anger or stress, your body enters a state of heightened arousal. This triggers the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol into your bloodstream. Adrenaline increases your heart rate and constricts your blood vessels, while cortisol increases glucose levels in your blood and alters immune system responses. These physiological changes are part of the "fight or flight" response, which prepares your body to confront or escape from perceived threats. While this response is crucial for survival in immediate danger, prolonged or frequent activation of the stress response can be detrimental to your health. Elevated levels of adrenaline and cortisol over time can contribute to chronic high blood pressure, as your heart works harder to pump blood through constricted vessels. This chronic strain on your cardiovascular system increases your risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions. Increased Heart Rate and Blood Vessel Constriction: One of the immediate effects of anger and stress is an increase in heart rate. This is your body's way of pumping more blood to your muscles and organs to prepare for action. However, this increased heart rate also puts more pressure on your blood vessels, leading to their constriction. When blood vessels constrict, the flow of blood becomes more forceful, raising your blood pressure. The combination of increased heart rate and blood vessel constriction contributes to elevated blood pressure levels during episodes of anger or stress. Over time, frequent or prolonged exposure to these physiological changes can lead to chronic hypertension, which is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications. Chronic Stress and Blood Pressure: Chronic stress, characterized by long-term or recurring stressors, can have a profound impact on your blood pressure. When you experience chronic stress, your body's stress response remains constantly activated, leading to sustained high levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol in your bloodstream. This chronic activation of the stress response can result in elevated blood pressure levels over time. Sustained high blood pressure, known as hypertension, puts increased strain on your blood vessels and organs, including the heart. Over time, this strain can lead to damage to the blood vessels, heart muscle, and other organs, increasing your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. Managing chronic stress is essential for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels and overall heart health. Strategies such as relaxation techniques, regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, adequate sleep, and seeking support from mental health professionals can help mitigate the negative effects of chronic stress on your cardiovascular system. Emotional Eating and Lifestyle Factors: In addition to the direct physiological effects of anger and stress on blood pressure, these emotions can also influence your lifestyle choices. Many people turn to comfort foods or unhealthy coping mechanisms when they are stressed or angry, such as overeating, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption. These behaviors can further contribute to high blood pressure and overall cardiovascular risk. Emotional eating, which involves eating in response to emotions rather than hunger, often leads to the consumption of high-calorie, sugary, or fatty foods. These food choices can contribute to weight gain, obesity, and metabolic disorders, all of which are risk factors for hypertension and heart disease. Similarly, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are known to increase blood pressure and have detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Smoking damages blood vessels reduces oxygen levels in the blood, and accelerates the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), leading to elevated blood pressure and increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Excessive alcohol intake can also raise blood pressure levels and contribute to heart muscle damage, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular complications. Addressing emotional eating and unhealthy lifestyle habits is crucial for managing blood pressure and reducing cardiovascular risk. Adopting healthier coping mechanisms, such as exercise, mindfulness, hobbies, or seeking support from healthcare professionals or counselors, can help individuals better manage their emotions and improve their overall well-being. Managing Anger and Stress for Heart Health: Managing anger and stress is essential for maintaining healthy blood pressure and overall heart health. Here are some tips to help you manage these emotions effectively: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to calm your mind and body. Engage in regular physical activity, which can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and limit your intake of processed foods, sugar, and salt. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night, as sleep deprivation can contribute to stress and elevated blood pressure. Seek support from friends, family, or a mental health professional if you are struggling to cope with anger or stress. Conclusion: In conclusion, anger and stress can have a significant impact on your blood pressure and overall heart health. By understanding how these emotions affect your body and implementing healthy coping strategies, you can protect yourself from the negative consequences of chronic stress and high blood pressure. Prioritizing emotional well-being and adopting a healthy lifestyle are key steps toward maintaining a healthy heart.  Related Blog Articles High blood pressure during pregnancy: Complications and Risks High Blood Pressure: Add These Foods To Your Diet To Control Blood Pressure Numbers Read More

For children and adolescents aged 5-17, the WHO suggests engaging in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. This should include activities that strengthen muscles and bones, such as running, jumping, dancing, or playing sports. Tailoring Physical Activity to Your Lifestyle: It's important to note that the recommended duration of physical activity can vary based on individual fitness levels, health goals, and lifestyle factors. Some individuals may benefit from more than the minimum recommended amount, while others may need to start gradually and progress over time. Protect Your Gut: Understanding the 7 Drinks to Skip on an Empty Stomach
Protect Your Gut: Understanding the 7 Drinks to Skip on an Empty Stomach
IntroductionWhat we consume plays a crucial role in our overall health and well-being. This is especially true when it comes to what we drink, particularly on an empty stomach. Certain drinks can irritate the delicate lining of our digestive system when consumed without food in our bellies. This can lead to a range of uncomfortable and sometimes even painful issues. Continental Hospitals Hyderabad, a leading healthcare provider, emphasizes the importance of mindful eating and drinking habits. This blog explores 7 common drinks that are best avoided on an empty stomach and explains the potential consequences of doing so. By understanding these simple tips, you can make informed choices to safeguard your gut health and feel your best. Why We Should Avoid Certain Drinks on an Empty StomachOur stomach is equipped with a protective lining that shields it from the acidity of digestive juices. When we haven't eaten anything, this lining is less effective. Consuming certain drinks on an empty stomach can overwhelm this protective barrier, leading to irritation and inflammation. Impact on Health: What we drink on an empty stomach can significantly affect our digestive system’s health, potentially causing discomfort or pain.Informed Choices: Understanding which drinks to avoid on an empty stomach helps in making choices that protect gut health and improve overall well-being. Some drinks are naturally acidic, while others contain ingredients that can stimulate stomach acid production. This increased acidity can cause: Heartburn: A burning sensation in the chest caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus.Indigestion: Discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen after eating or drinking.Nausea and vomiting: Feelings of sickness and expulsion of stomach contents.Stomach cramps: Painful contractions of the stomach muscles.Diarrhea: Loose or watery stools.7 Drinks to Avoid on an Empty Stomach (Explained by Continental Hospitals Hyderabad)Citrus Juices: While packed with Vitamin C, orange, grapefruit, and lemon juices are highly acidic. On an empty stomach, this acidity can trigger heartburn and indigestion. Consider diluting them with water or having them after a meal. Coffee: Coffee stimulates the production of stomach acid, which can irritate the stomach lining when empty. Additionally, coffee can worsen feelings of anxiety and interfere with sleep if consumed on an empty stomach. Opt for a cup after breakfast or a light snack. Carbonated Beverages: Fizzy drinks like colas and soda contain carbon dioxide gas, which can cause bloating and discomfort, especially on an empty stomach. The sugar content can also lead to a blood sugar spike and crash, leaving you feeling tired and irritable. Alcohol: Alcohol irritates the stomach lining and slows down digestion. Consuming alcohol on an empty stomach can worsen these effects, leading to heartburn, nausea, and even ulcers. It's best to have alcohol with food or avoid it altogether if you experience digestive issues. Spicy Drinks: Spicy beverages like some spice-infused teas or cocktails can irritate the stomach lining, especially when empty. The capsaicin in spices triggers the release of digestive juices, which can cause discomfort on an empty stomach. Energy Drinks: Loaded with sugar, caffeine, and artificial ingredients, energy drinks can disrupt your blood sugar levels and irritate the stomach lining when consumed without food. The high caffeine content can also lead to anxiety and jitters. Very Hot Beverages: While a warm drink can be soothing, excessively hot beverages like tea or coffee can damage the delicate tissues of the esophagus, especially on an empty stomach. Let your drink cool down a bit before consuming it. Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Enjoy the melody, without damaging your ears Music inspires us to do many new things in life and motivates us to overcome challenges! Music improves other senses of a human body, like gaining better vision and improved response to touch. Overall music even helps in improving the ability to paint a better and complete picture of the world at large. However, one important caution is to avoid listening to loud music to ensure it does not damage the ears. Music is present in every aspect of our life and we voluntarily or involuntarily are exposed to music daily. It is important that one is exposed to the right kind of music, which is soothing in nature in the longer term, instead of loud/brash sounds. Intermittent bouts of rap or rock-n-roll are fine, but this cannot be a mainstay in one’s life to stay healthy for a long period of time. 5-Tips: Listen to Music, Responsibly Use Music Players at 60% of the Maximum Volume Use Your Music Player For 60 Minutes A Day Only Commenting on the impact of music, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Continental Hospitals said, “According to some research reports on the impact of music on education, it has been found that those students who listening to good quality music daily turn out to be good in science and mathematics, especially ‘algebra’. Music is believed to play the role of ‘social glue’, and young minds exposed to music emerge into good Samaritans as they grow.” “A 2014 research report by the Department of Education in the United States indicated that over 93% of students exposed to good music graduated with merit, and music also removes barriers between students coming from various ethnic and social backgrounds. Music also helps adolescents release or control emotions and helps them cope with difficult situations such as peer pressure, substance abuse, pressures of study and family, the dynamics of friendships and social life, and the pain of loss or abuse.” It is widely believed that rhythm abilities, such as tapping to a beat, relate with reading skills, and available initial evidence of how both abilities may rely on common underlying neural mechanisms of sound processing reiterates the importance of music in a student’s life. Not just these, teenagers associate playing music with music literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and heightened intellectual capabilities, etc. Read More
Take care of your kidney”s health
Take care of your kidney”s health
Hyderabad, March 11 (IANS) At a time when the world is worried about coronavirus pandemic, the World Kidney Day on March 12 may pass as another annual event. But the kidney-related ailments are silent killer. The day aims to raise awareness about kidney”s importance to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health issues worldwide. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are some of the high-risk factors that result in kidney ailments and at times are life-threatening in nature, according to Dr Dhananjaya K.L., consultant nephrologist at Continental Hospitals, here. Undergoing tests is the only and best way to know the health of kidneys. A person with symptoms, like fatigue, high blood pressure and swelling of feet, must be careful of his kidneys; and ideally undergo regular health check-up for blood sugar, creatinine and eGFR to assess its filtration rate. India is estimated to have over 50 million people with diabetes. They are at a high risk of chronic kidney ailments. The diseases become prevalent, mainly due to poor lifestyle choices of people. Hence, it”s important to realise importance of leading an active and energised life to prevent the possibility of diabetes that could lead to kidney-related complications. “In a human body, kidneys are among the most amazing organs, which ensure wellbeing of the person. These bean-shaped organs filter 1,200 ml of blood per minute (1,700 litres a day) to keep the person healthy. It also helps remove waste and maintain a balance of chemicals and minerals in the body. It”s the process that happens in a kidney that keeps bones and teeth strong,” said Dr Dhananjaya. “While dialysis is the most common available treatment to support failing kidneys, at an advanced stage, often considered as renal failure, the only option left is to undergo a transplant,” he said. Hyderabad, considered a major healthcare destination, offers world-class kidney transplant facilities from a variety of sources, like live and cadaveric transplant. Chief Transplant Urologist and a Padmasri Awardee Sarbeswar Sahariah, who recently completed 1,000 kidney transplant surgeries, believes transplantation is a safe and best approach for individuals suffering kidney failure to lead an active life. How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. HYDERABAD: Unforeseen circumstances require unprecedented measures! And today India is under an unprecedented “lockdown” for 21-days to fight the global pandemic coronavirus. The lockdown would mean people would not be allowed to step out of their homes freely and will have restricted access to even everyday essential commodities. People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. However, for a large section of people in Indian society, thisis unacceptable! It has been noticed that people are not just worried about their economic prospects; but alsoexpressing anguish over getting restricted to their residences. Risk factors : Commenting on the risks, Dr. Jyotirmayi K, Consultant Psychiatrist, Continental Hospitals said,“Lockdown or other restrictions to daily routine will be stressful and there surely are going to be some psychological impacts on people. To avoid greater damage from happening time and again, we humans need to work harder enduring some levels of stress; and must realize that this phase too will pass soon.” To keep yourself active Remind yourself that this is a temporary phase Remember that you are a hero, and doing this for the community Stay connected with near & dear via phone, email, social media Sleep at regular routines to find each passing day relaxing Stay physically active to ensure mental agility Maintain balance by allocating specific work hours, and take regular breaks Focus on doing household chores and share burden with family members Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing “On an everyday basis, most people state they do not find time for themselves for their wellbeing. This 21-daylockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for people to spend time on themselves. Doing Yoga, speaking tofamily members, remembering past/childhood memories, speaking to old friends and reminiscing past memories couldbe a perfect way to keep oneself active and keep off from anxiety,” concluded Dr. Jyotirmayi. Another risk associated with this lockdown is the possibility of one retreating into a sedentary lifestyle, and thus adding many kilograms to the bodyweight. Commenting on this, Zeenath Fatima, Consultant Dietician, Continental Hospitals said, “During normal days manypeople tend to eat at restaurants or foods prepared not at home, doing no great favor to the human body. Put underrestrictions, now people are forced to opt for home-cooked food, which is the best and healthiest option any day.Eating green-leafy and other regular vegetables will not increase weight and during these stressful times, avoidingmeat or meat-based foods could be a better idea.” Life under a lockdown situation can negatively affect mental health, causing post-traumatic stress, confusion and even anger. But by keeping your active life going and maintaining peace in life is the best solution to ensure you wade through these difficult times with ease. Read More
What Covid? Birth date still matters
What Covid? Birth date still matters
In the times of Covid-19, what has not changed are the date and time when a newborn infant is born and doctors cannot argue about it as the pregnant woman is their major concern. These dictates are still being noted in maternity hospitals as the time and day of birthing is a priority for families and their astrological calendars. A C-Section delivery, very high in both Telugu-speaking states, is still a preference during these times too. Only corporate and big nursing homes are operational and all the load of affluent patients is on them. A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, explained, “We have a virus around us but that does not stop people from arguing over the time and day of the delivery. These beliefs are strong and with a newborn baby, no risks in astrology are to be taken.” Doctors are keen that pregnant women are safe and for that reason normal delivery is carried out by junior doctors and senior doctors are around for supervision. Earlier, they would all crowd around the patient along with the nurses but now social distance is maintained. “It is like going back to old times where the woman has to push the baby down and from far, we would give instructions,” explained a senior doctor. C-sections are done by wearing personal protective equipment as due to Covid-19 these extra precautionary measures have to be taken during the birthing process. The biggest challenge stated doctors are the scans as they are not being carried out for all pregnant women. “We are going back to times when there were no ultrasound scans. This is because it would unnecessarily expose a pregnant woman to risk. Hence only if there is a clinical indication of anomaly in foetal movement then scans are being done. It is one in 2000 cases and, mostly, not required.” Scanning was a major part of all the three trimesters but doctors now do not want to risk their patients. The husband was a part of the birthing process but that also is not allowed as it is not safe. Similarly, those in the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy are not called to hospitals for routine checks but video conferencing is provided to clear their doubts. Tele-medicine and email are also used by patients to check on substitutes for medicines as there is a crisis of brands. Dr Sri Latha Gorthi, gynaecologist, explained, “So far we have dealt with patients who have been seeing us from first day. Hence we know their history. Yet we check with them if they have come in contact with anyone who has travelled from abroad. There has not been a single case so far but precautions of checking travel history are mandatory for us too.” Pregnant women are already immune-compromised and hence precautions in terms of social distancing, hygiene, avoiding contact with people from Covid-19-affected countries and also within the community is important, stated Dr Kavitha Naragoni, senior gynecologist and infertility specialist at Continental Hospitals.
