What must I expect during the hospitalization?

Can the patients have a care-giver and receive visitors?

At Continental Hospitals, we strongly advise that you have a family member or close friend constantly by your side, while hospitalized. We acknowledge that you may be comforted by meeting your well-wishers and that your near and dear ones are eager to visit you at the hospital. Visitors are allowed in the hospital only during visiting hours and should always abide by the visitor’s guidelines, to cause minimal inconvenience to all patients. In some cases, like intensive care, visitors may not be permitted.

What is the expected outcome of hospitalization?

Each patient is different and can have different requirements with regards to hospitalization. What you can expect from hospitalization should be discussed with your doctor before admission. The end of hospital stay only means that you do not need constant monitoring and are fit to continue your recovery at home. But discharge may not mean the end of treatment. Depending on your case, your doctor will suggest follow-up visits, medication and investigations.

Preparing for Surgery

International Patients usually have time for preparation as most of the procedures they undergo are elective. Surgery is many times the best way to recover from an ailment and get back to a healthy life. This is even more so for international patients who will be making a long journey away from their home country.

The following must be a part of your preparation for surgery

  • Consultation with your doctor to understand the need for surgery
  • Clarity about the procedure and expected results and recovery
  • Preparing necessary travel documentation like visas and tickets
  • Diagnostic procedures and reports necessary for surgery
  • Preparing for hospital expenses, by self or insurance

It is imperative that the patient is mentally prepared for undergoing any surgery or procedure. Sometimes consent of the immediate family members may also be needed. FAQs

Why is a surgery necessitated?

Surgery is suggested by doctors depending on the need for each specific case. Surgery usually entails these procedures excision, suturing, grafting, bypassing and other such procedures. Doctors recommend surgery if it is the best chance to recover from an ailment and get back to a healthy life.

Who will perform the surgery?

You will have detailed consultation with your surgeon before the surgery to understand the procedure and the need for the same. A specialized team of nurses, paramedics and doctors assist the surgeon during surgery. The specialist head surgeon in charge of each surgery may be accompanied by other specialist on a case-to-case basis. An anaesthetist is responsible for administering anaesthesia, monitoring your consciousness levels and necessary pain medication.

What will happen on the day of surgery?

The patient is prepped for surgery in a pre-operation area, on the day of surgery. This involves wearing sterile robes, intubation if required and final investigations and check-up. Consumption of food may be prohibited for the patient from the midnight in the day of surgery in preparation. Our team will inform you of any other precautions you need to take ahead of time.

Changes in scheduled surgery may happen in case of unforeseen circumstances. In such an event, the time and/or day of surgery may need to be changed.

During your surgery, family members and care-givers are requested to wait in the designated surgical waiting room or hospital lobby. To monitor your condition, such as heart rate and blood pressure, during the surgery, several monitors are applied. This includes small sticky patches on your chest and automatic blood pressure cuff on your arm.

Things to Remember Before Surgery

  • You should not eat or drink anything, even water, after midnight on the day of your surgery. You can take necessary medications up to two hours before surgery. But limit your intake of water to two tablespoons for taking medication. Eating or drinking before surgery can result in delay or even cancellation of the procedure.
  • Items like watches, hairpins, contact lenses, wig, jewellery should not be worn during surgery.
  • To prepare you for surgery you may be required to remove items like dentures and other non-permanent items including undergarments.
  • Do not forget to bring your personal items like clothing, nightwear, slippers, and toiletries for your stay in hospital after surgery

What kind of anesthetic will I be given?

Pain medication and anaesthesia is chosen based on factors such as nature of surgery, condition of the patient, and recovery options after surgery. Consent of the care-givers is registered and they are informed of the medication and anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is administered for critical procedures, whereas local anaesthesia is preferred for localized surgeries. In some cases, where general anaesthesia unavailable or cannot be administered, a spinal anaesthesia is the viable choice.

How long does it take to recover from surgery?

After surgery, patient is typically kept overnight in the post-surgical intensive care to recover sufficiently from surgery. As the anaesthesia wears down it is normal to experience mild grogginess, pain etc.

It is important to monitor vital signs of the patient immediately after surgery. For this you will be taken to the recovery room where a trained nurse will provide you with the necessary care. Sore throat, dry mouth, chills and blurred vision may be some of the symptoms that need to be addressed during your time in the recovery room. It is essential that you report any pain or discomfort in the area of surgery. You can also ask for pain medication. After adequate time in the recovery room, doctors will suggest to shift the patient to an intensive care, normal ward or room, as the case may be.

It is best for your care-givers to be present in the waiting room before your surgery ends, so that the surgeon can speak to them. In case they leave the designated area near the completion of your surgery, they can miss out on interacting with the surgeon. Your surgeon can answer queries and concerns of your care-givers and family members regarding your surgery, well-being and future course of action for treatment and discharge.

Going Home
