If detected early, Breast Cancer has an extremely encouraging survival rate of 98%. According to WHO, nearly 60% of women in India diagnosed with Breast Cancer are in the advanced stages of cancer (Stage III or IV). This reduces chances of successful treatment and survival. So early diagnosis is key to beating breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Screening
Every 3 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. With Breast Cancer Screening, the disease can be found even before the symptoms appear. The goal is to detect the cancer as early as possible, when it is most treatable.
Continental Hospitals provides Genetic screening and Risk Propelling. It is best to seek your doctor’s advice about which screening tests will be best suited for you. Screening is recommended if you are at a high risk for breast cancer. This includes women who are genetically at a higher risk of cancer, those who have a close relative who suffered from breast cancer, exposure to radiation therapy between ages 10-30 years or having a personal history of breast cancer.
Breast Self Exam
This is a primary check to self-determine whether there are any abnormalities in the breast. All adult women are encouraged to take a self-exam at home every month. Any abnormality like change in shape or texture, cysts or lumps or discharge should be immediately reported to the doctor for further tests and diagnosis.
The self exam can be done in 4 easy steps.
- Step 1 – Arms on the sides and raised
You should visually inspect your breasts while looking in the mirror. First inspect with arms at your side, then with raised arms overhead. There should not be any swelling, dimpling, change in contour or changes in the nipples.
- Step 2 – Arms on the hips
Rest your arms on the hips and flex your chest muscles. While the left and right breasts are almost never identical, there should be no dimpling, puckering, or changes in any one particular side.
- Step 3 – Lying down
Breast tissue spreads evenly along the chest wall when you are lying down. Place a pillow under your right shoulder, and lift your arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move your fingers gently in small circular motions covering the entire area of your breast. Squeeze the nipples to check if there is any discharge, check for lumps or cysts. Repeat the same on the left side.
- Step 4 – Checking the entire breast area
You should feel your breasts from top to bottom and side to side. Ensure that you are covering the entire area of the breasts and not leaving out any tissue. Feel your breasts with a soft touch and then slowly increase the pressure. You should not feel any lumps or pain.
Clinical Breast Exam
A clinical breast exam is performed by a trained healthcare professional. This can be a part of your annual health check-up as well. The healthcare professional will examine your breasts visually and also physically examine them in a similar way as a self-exam. Though a breast self-exam has a lot of value, the experienced and trained approach of a clinical examination can sometimes catch a symptom that may be missed by a self-exam.
Testing for Breast Cancer
If an abnormality is detected in a self-exam or a clinical exam, your doctor will recommend one or more of these diagnostic procedures. This is to rule out the possibility of non-cancerous growths or lumps and to confirm breast cancer to recommend further course of treatment.
These are X-rays of the breast. Mammogram may also be used for screening. Diagnostic mammograms, after detection of symptoms in a clinical exam, are more detailed to find abnormal cells or lumps in the breast.
Ultrasound, as the name suggests, uses high frequency sound waves to paint a digital picture of the organ. Any part of the breast filled with liquid will look different than a solid mass. Ultrasound helps in detecting whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. A solid lump could be cancerous. Ultrasound also helps in pinpointing the exact location and size of the lump or growth.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
In MRI, magnetic and radio waves are used to generate detailed images of the breast tissue. These help in determining the extent or spread of the cancer. Doctors can distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue.
Biopsy is the test where a tissue or fluid from the affected area is removed and tested for presence of cancer cells. A needle is used to remove fluid, whereas tissue may need surgical removal. This is the only test that can definitively determine the presence of cancer.
- Lab Tests
If cancer is detected, then these tests may be performed to determine the type of treatment that would be most suitable for the patient. These tests can also give an idea about how the disease is likely to progress in the individual.
Continental Institute of Breast Cancer provides the state-of-the-art tests in the field of oncology and breast cancer.
Early detection and timely treatment are key in treating breast cancer. Survival rate with early detection is very high in case of breast cancer. Stages of Breast Cancer
To determine the best course of treatment for Breast Cancer, it is important to know the extent or spread of the disease in the patient. The most widely accepted method of staging breast cancer is the TNM method.
T= Tumour Size
N = Lymph Node Status (Number and location of cancerous lymph nodes)
M = Metastases (whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body)
Based on this staging approach, cancer can be classified into the following stages
- Stages 0 and 1
In this stage, the cancer is contained in the place of origin and the tumour is small in size (less than 2cm). The cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes or is in very small clusters.
- Stage 2
The cancer is growing in this stage, but is still contained on the breast and/or nearby lymph nodes. The tumour size can be between 2 and 5 cm with spread to lymph nodes or larger than 5cm without spread in lymph nodes
- Stage 3
In this stage, the cancer has extended beyond the breast to nearby lymph nodes and muscles. Distant organs are not affected. This is an advanced stage, but treatment options are available. Tumour can be larger than 5cm.
- Stage 4
This is an advanced stage where the cancer has spread to other parts of the body like brain, lungs, bones and liver. Though this stage is considered incurable, with proper care and the current treatment options, it may possible to extend the life of the patient by several years.
Continental Hospitals has the best breast cancer specialists in Hyderabad who will be by your side to guide you through the proper treatment procedures.

Surgery is the most common and promising treatment for breast cancer. In a breast cancer surgery, the tumour and nearby margins are surgically removed. Surgeries are usually coupled with radiation therapy to prevent the spread of the cancer.
Surgical options may include:
- Lumpectomy – removal of lump and nearby tissue
- Lymph node removal – Removal of lymph nodes for testing the extent of disease
- Mastectomy – Removal of the affected breast. This procedure is less common today or partial mastectomy is done.
- Breast Reconstruction – In case of mastectomy, the patient can opt for breast reconstruction surgery. This helps you become more comfortable with your body post-surgery. The breast can be reconstructed using implants or using tissue from another part of your body like belly, back or buttocks.
Chemotherapy uses a combination of drugs to destroy and/or slow down the growth of cancer cells. The right blend of drugs is chosen based on the stage, tumour size, tumour grade and type, lymph nodes affected, risk of spread.
- Radiation Therapy
High energy rays are used to kill cancer cells. In case of breast cancer, radiation therapy may be used to destroy cancer cells that may remain in the breast or armpit after surgery.
- Hormone Therapy
Some times hormones like estrogen and progesterone may cause the breast cancer to grown. In such cases, doctors recommend hormone therapy, after proper testing. Drugs can be given to cut off supply of hormones to cancer cells.
- Targeted Therapy
Targeted therapy is usually used in combination with other therapies. But this treatment method has lesser side effects as they can attack specific breast cells, without affecting the healthy breast cells.
Nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can help in preventing up to 40% of breast cancer cases. It is also important post-treatment of breast cancer to eat healthy and have an active lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight and body.
