What must I expect during the hospitalization?

Can the patients have a care-giver and receive visitors?

At Continental Hospitals, we strongly advise that you have a family member or close friend constantly by your side, while hospitalized. We acknowledge that you may be comforted by meeting your well-wishers and that your near and dear ones are eager to visit you at the hospital. Visitors are allowed in the hospital only during visiting hours and should always abide by the visitor’s guidelines, to cause minimal inconvenience to all patients. In some cases, like intensive care, visitors may not be permitted.

What is the expected outcome of hospitalization?

Each patient is different and can have different requirements with regards to hospitalization. What you can expect from hospitalization should be discussed with your doctor before admission. The end of hospital stay only means that you do not need constant monitoring and are fit to continue your recovery at home. But discharge may not mean the end of treatment. Depending on your case, your doctor will suggest follow-up visits, medication and investigations.

Preparing for Surgery

Surgery is many times the best way to recover from an ailment and get back to a healthy life. A surgery can be an emergency requirement, which gives little time for preparation. On the other hand, an elective procedure allows the patient to be well-prepared and gather all the necessary information before the surgery. The following must be a part of your preparation for surgery

  • Consultation with your doctor to understand the need for surgery
  • Clarity about the procedure and expected results and recovery
  • Diagnostic procedures and reports necessary for surgery
  • Preparing for hospital expenses, by self or insurance

It is imperative that the patient is mentally prepared for undergoing any surgery or procedure. Sometimes consent of the immediate family members may also be needed. Our team of expert doctors and dedicated staff ensure that all your queries are addressed before the procedure to help in this preparation.

FAQ

What should I expect when the operation is over?

Once the operation is over, you will be moved into the recovery area. This area is equipped to monitor patients after surgery.

Many patients feel groggy, confused, and chilly when they wake up after an operation. You may have muscle aches or a sore throat shortly after surgery. These problems should not last long. You can ask for medicine to relieve them. You will remain in the recovery room until you are stable.

You may be encouraged to get out of bed and walk around soon after your operation. You may feel tired and weak at first. The sooner you resume activity, the sooner your body’s functions can get back to normal.

How do I connect with the Patient Relations Cell?

Clinical staff and nurses are primarily responsible to take care of all the patients and we are confident that our medical staff will cater to all your concerns. However, if they are certain unresolved issues, you can speak to our Patient Relations Staff for the resolution of your queries which lies at the second level of escalation matrix

What can I do to help ensure my surgery will go smoothly?

If you smoke, try to stop smoking before your operation. General anaesthesia affects the normal function of your lungs. If you are under any medication, ask if you should keep taking it before or after the operation and brief your doctor with all your medications, including those that have been prescribed for you and those that are bought over-the-counter. If you have diabetes, controlling your glucose levels before surgery may improve healing. Follow a special diet before surgery if your health care provider suggests it.

What are the concerns that the Patient Relations Cell typically handles?

The following concerns are handled by the Patient Relations Cell:

  1. Concerns about your hospitalization.
  2. Questions on the Hospital policies.
  3. Questions on the services rendered at Gleneagles Global Hospitals.
  4. Any special needs of the patient and/or family members.

Additionally, the Patient Relations Cell will look into your concerns based on special considerations or special needs, based on the situation.

Going Home

At Continental Hospitals, we understand that you are most at ease in the comforts of your own home, no matter how comfortable the hospital stay is. Which is why we weigh-in your desire to head home along with the need for you to stay in the hospital for further treatment or observation. Patient may feel relaxed at home, but in some cases the requirement of a sterile environment or constant observation becomes greater. It is also important for you to have a detailed understanding of the care and precautions that you need to take at home and the follow-up visits to the hospital that may be necessary. Discharge from hospital may not mean the end of treatment but it is an important step in your journey towards recovery. We have included a checklist here to give you an idea of things to consider before discharge.

Pre Discharge Checklist

  Discussion with the Doctor

Your doctor will assess your health condition and suggest timing and feasibility of discharge. He will also help you understand the care and preparedness you would need post-discharge.

  Post Discharge Treatment Plan

Your doctor will also chart out the future course of treatment which will include medication, diagnostics, and consultations, as required.

Discharge Documentation

It is important to collect all your medical records such as prescriptions, reports, bills etc. before you leave the hospital. This will be useful for future reference for you as well as for your doctor.

  Discussion with the Doctor

Whether your payment is by cashless insurance or self, do settle your bills prior to discharge.

  Post Discharge Treatment Plan

Your home environment may have to be prepared to receive and host a patient under recovery. Your family members and friends can ensure that this is taken care of before you are discharged from hospital.

Discharge Documentation

Having undergone a treatment or surgery, there may be some restrictions that you have to adhere to post-surgery. Make sure you have a clear understanding of these to ensure you have a speedy recovery at home.
