Nursing the World to Health

25/03/2023

Every year, the 12th of May is observed as the International Nurses’ Day, where the whole globe comes together to commemorate these essential healthcare workers. As the world faces a pandemic, their jobs have become significantly vital, and they do it with pride.

There are more than 20 million nurses around the globe having different stories to narrate depicting altruism, competency, advocacy and professionalism in their day to day practice. They have learnt about hope and courage, joy and despair, pain and suffering, life and death and empathy and compassion. Nurses’ are in the beginning and in the end of human existence on earth giving the trust to the New borns by their hugs and witnessing the last breath of dying by holding the hands.

Nurses serve humanity and, by their actions, they protect the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and nations. They partner with medical profession impacting better clinical outcome. Nurses’ are the first and the last line of defense in assuring patient safety with no expectations in return, hence the magnitude of unsung heroes on an increasing curve.

The year 2020 presents greater opportunity to celebrate the unsung heroes to mark in history their act of bravery, to show that the Nurses’ are in the center, addressing wide range of health challenges. Its apt for COVID 19 to appear in this very year where WHO has declared “2020- The year of Nurses and Midwives”.

Nursing is an evergreen profession and “Nurse becoming” is a voluntary career decision of an individual when it is a choice and not a chance. Nursing deserves more than the present recognition and blooming month of May reminds us to pay respect to every single Nurse working in diverse health care settings. Action speaks louder than words and it is a testing time for Organizations, Institutions, Hospitals, and Associations to demonstrate solidarity towards the unique profession “Nursing”. With the capacity of Director of Nursing, enjoyed being in Nursing profession over 3 decades, May I extend my heartfelt thanks to every single Nurse out there who reads this message. I wish all of you good health, well being, spirituality and success in all endeavors.

My beloved Nurses’,

Stay steadfast and grow professionally.
